“In September 2022 I was grappling with unresolved trauma and severe symptoms of self-loathing, suicidal ideation, inescapable feelings of depression and overwhelming, constant anxiety. I had been on psychiatric medication and in cognitive behavioral therapy for 15 years at that point, and it became clear after years of struggle that if traditional methods were going to work for me, they would have already. Last October, with the help of my healthcare provider I decided to go off all of the medications I was on and transition to psilocybin. The effect, while not immediate, crept up on me. My mood became much more stable over the ensuing months and soon there were people approaching me, telling me that my energy had changed. Someone close to me said that it no longer seemed like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. While my disorder will never truly leave me and my work is certainly not done, magic mushrooms have markedly improved my lived experience. Today, I feel grounded in who I am, and curious about who I will become. In no way do I endorse quitting psychiatric medication if you need it, nor do I discount its value when applied appropriately, but I’m looking forward to seeing how magic mushrooms can be integrated into psychiatric care to address treatment-resistant cases like mine. My work with Shamama has been so beneficial and I want others to have the opportunity to explore this option as well.”
